Passengers searching Anuradhapura to Colombo bus often think there is one timetable. There are three National Transport Commission (NTC) corridors, and each one serves different towns. Boarding the wrong via-route can skip Thalawa, miss Puttalam, or add an hour you did not plan for.

Route 04 is the west-coast corridor. From Anuradhapura it typically runs toward Nochchiyagama and Puttalam, then south through Chilaw and the Negombo / Katunayake side before Colombo. Operators and stands label it පුත්තලම හරහා (04).

This is the route passengers mean when they say “Puttalam Road bus.” It is not the Thalawa bus and it is not the Maradankadawala bus. If you live in or need to stop at Puttalam, Chilaw, or Nochchiyagama, this is the match. If you need Eppawala or Maradankadawala, do not board a 04 just because the destination says Colombo.

Some premium A/C coaches on this family use the Katunayake Expressway for the last Colombo approach. That is why “highway bus” ads appear on this corridor even though there is no completed Northern Expressway into Anuradhapura. Route 15-1 (written 15/1 on some boards) is the Thalawa–Eppawala corridor. Typical inland towns include Thalawa, Eppawala, Mahailuppallama, and Ipalogama, then the Kekirawa / Dambulla / Kurunegala trunk toward Colombo. Stands label it තලාව, එප්පාවල හරහා (15-1).

This is the bus for passengers whose village or pickup is on the Thalawa–Eppawala road, not on Puttalam Road. Luxury A/C runs on this family often use part of the Central Expressway (E04) after Kurunegala, which is why two “15” coaches can feel very different in time even when both say Colombo.

Do not confuse 15-1 with route 15 coaches that continue to Vavuniya or Jaffna. Those long-north services are a different corridor. If your ticket or the trip card says Anuradhapura to Colombo via Thalawa–Eppawala, you are on 15-1.

Route 15-1-1 is the Maradankadawala corridor. Typical towns include Galkulama, Thirappane, Maradankadawala, Kekirawa, then Dambulla, Galewela, and Kurunegala toward Colombo. Stands label it මරදන්කඩවල හරහා (15-1-1).

Pick this when you need Maradankadawala, Thirappane, or the Kekirawa–Dambulla A9-side towns. A 15-1 Thalawa bus can miss Maradankadawala even though both later meet around Kekirawa / Dambulla. The via-label is how you tell them apart at the stand.

Limited-stop and luxury A/C coaches on 15-1-1 share the same road family but not the same clock time. Treat “about 4.5 to 6 hours” as a planning band, then trust the departure and arrival printed on your CeyBus trip card.

1. Name the town you must pass, not only Colombo or Anuradhapura. Puttalam or Chilaw means 04. Thalawa or Eppawala means 15-1. Maradankadawala or Thirappane means 15-1-1.

2. On CeyBus, open Anuradhapura to Colombo (or Colombo to Anuradhapura), pick your date, and read via / boarding / class on each trip card before you open the seat map.

3. At the stand, ask “කුමන හරහාද?” (which via?) and match පුත්තලම, තලාව/එප්පාවල, or මරදන්කඩවල. The destination board alone is not enough.

4. You may also see route 57 via Ella Road (Thambuttegama, Galgamuwa, Padeniya). That is a fourth family, not one of the three in this first guide. Skip it unless that via-label matches your towns.
